Malaysia: Penang soll rauchfrei werden

straitstimes.com meldet:
GEORGE TOWN - SMOKING will only be allowed in gazetted areas under a proposal by the state government to make Penang 'smoke free'. If such a proposal gets the nod from the Health Ministry, it will certainly give smokers in the state a 'harder' time. State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said it had handed the proposal to the Health Ministry. 'Instead of gazetting non-smoking areas, we have proposed to the ministry for the situation to be reversed. We will gazette the areas where people can smoke. 'We want to encourage the people to discipline themselves, rather than using laws alone to solve the problem,' he said, adding that the proposal was aimed at creating a healthier state.

Malaysia nach Terroralarm: erhöhte Sicherheitsstufe für Tempel

straitstimes.com meldet:
KUALA LUMPUR - TEMPLES in Batu Caves and Penang are stepping up security following the threat to blow up certain places of worship. R. Nadarajah, chairman of the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Devas-thanam temple in Batu Caves said the 24-member temple committee will hold an emergency meeting soon to discuss additional security for the temple, a major tourist site in Malaysia. 'I was shocked after reading about the threat. I knew it was Batu Caves after reading it,' he said, adding that he would ask for more police presence near the temple grounds. 'We will also install CCTVs within the perimeters of the temple and have more security guards to carry out patrols,' he said, adding that the assistance of Rela would also be sought. The temple, also known as Batu Caves Temple in Malaysia, is a prominent religious site for Hindus across the world. Nadarajah said they might even consider screening the people to prevent any untoward incident. In George Town, the body managing the Kek Lok Si Temple urged police to set up a police beat base at the temple and also at the entrances to other famous places of worship in the state for safety.

Spektakuläre Zugstrecken: Eastern and Orient Express - Chiang Mai, Thailand to Singapore

guardian.co.uk meldet:
An intimate view of the equatorial tropics minus the mosquitoes. Aesthetically, the Eastern and Orient Express stopped circa 1925. The cabins are panelled with cherry wood and marquetry; the observation car masquerades as a colonial veranda. Thus sheltered from the discomforts of nature you can gaze upon rainforests, rubber plantations and paddy fields. You’ll pass through Bangkok, cross the bridge over the River Kwai, head down the Malaysian coast, salute Kuala Lumpa and end by the tropical beaches of Penang with a handful of sightseeing stops along the way.

TOP-Hotels Malaysia: The Eastern and Oriental, Penang

concierge.com meldet:
A millennial renovation brought the hotel up to 21st-century standards, with a minimum of architectural tampering. The original Otis elevator, the oldest in Malaysia, is still in operation, and the lobby dome's famous echo is as uncanny as ever, but the decor suffers slightly from Ye Olde Repro syndrome, with bellhops dressed in pith helmets and khaki shorts. The 101 rooms are typically colonial, decorated in creams, dark woods, and Persian carpets.
