Arches Nationalpark

Der Arches-Nationalpark ist ein Naturschutzgebiet im Norden des Colorado-Plateaus am Colorado River nördlich der Stadt Moab im US-Bundesstaat Utah. Er bewahrt die weltweit größte Konzentration an natürlichen Steinbögen (engl.: arches), die durch Erosion und Verwitterung ständig neu entstehen und wieder vergehen. Im Parkgebiet sind über 2000 Arches nachgewiesen. Das Gebiet wurde 1929 als National Monument unter Schutz gestellt und 1971 zum Nationalpark aufgewertet. Es wird vom National Park Service betreut. Arches National Park reached a milestone last Saturday when Victoria Carlson of Santa Fe, New Mexico arrived at the entrance. Ms. Carlson found herself greeted with unusual fanfare by the park rangers at the gate, who were eager to welcome their one millionth visitor.

Arches National Park: Klettern und Canyoning wird reglementiert

Bisher waren Bergsteigen und Canyoning im Arches National Park beliebte Aktivitäten. Lange Zeit hat der Park diese Nutzungen ohne Reglementierung erlaubt. Aber in den letzten Jahren sind zunehmend Probleme aufgetreten, so dass Parkmitarbeiter nun einen formellen Managementplan für Klettern und Canyoning entwickeln.

Arches National Park in eastern Utah is known for the reddish-orange sandstone rock formations that adorn the landscape. Shapes have been created very slowly over time and the most famous feature at Arches National Park is Delicate Arch. Other arches include Landscape Arch and the Double Arch, branching from the same base in different directions. Surprisingly, Arches isn't all about the arches. Tall, thin sandstone slabs stick up out of the ground like fins, or blades to form the Organ and Park Avenue.
