An Air France Boeing 747-400, registration F-GITH performing flight AF-690 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Miami,FL (USA), was enroute overhead the Atlantic when a male passenger became seriously ill showing symptoms of a drug overdose prompting the crew to divert to St John's,NL (Canada) for a safe landing. The passenger was taken to a local hospital.

New England ports see a bright spot on the horizon as they prepare for what they expect will be a record number of cruise ships during the tourism season this year. New England and eastern Canada have been growing in popularity among cruise lines, and this year could be the busiest yet with passengers who are drawn to the region's beauty, culture and history. Maine ports are expecting 335 cruise ship calls this year, up from 281 last year. Ports in the Canadian Maritimes and in Newfoundland are projecting 467 calls, 84 more than in 2009. Boston is anticipating a record 300,000-plus cruise ship passengers to pass through its port.

One of the chosen airports was in Gander, Newfoundland – a tiny town of 10,000 people in the north east corner of Canada. In one day’s time, over 6000 passengers from many re-routed aircrafts spilled into the small town. Many of the passengers had been on their airplanes for nearly 24 hours – they were confused, tired, hungry, frustrated, and scared by the senseless attack on their country. But as they took their first steps off of their airplane and onto the ground in Gander, they were met with a spirit of a different kind. When the news in town broke that the United States had been attacked and thousands of passengers would be re-routed to Gander, the people of Gander dropped what they were doing and sprung into action. It’s not a wealthy town by any stretch of the imagination, but without hesitation, people responded graciously. The weary passengers were greeted with rows of food and drinks and volunteers eager to serve. Because of the size of the town, where would these travelers sleep? People from Gander opened their doors and took in these strangers – denying anything in return.

The federal government announced Friday the creation of eastern Canada's largest national park in Labrador, to be home to entire populations of endangered species. The park will comprise roughly 11,000 square kilometres in the Mealy Mountains area of Labrador, making it the largest national park in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario. As well, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador is turning 3,000 square kilometres of the adjacent lower Eagle River watershed into a provincial water park.
