Arkansas ist einer der südlichen Bundesstaaten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Die Beinamen Arkansas' sind The Natural State (dt.: Der natürliche Staat) und Land of Opportunity (dt.: Land der Möglichkeit). Die Hauptstadt ist Little Rock. Der Name Arkansas rührt von der französischen Aussprache des indianischen Wortes der Quapaw her, das sinngemäß Land der flussabwärts gelegenen Menschen bedeutete. A Southwest Airlines employee contacted police when an incorrectly labeled package turned out to contain 40 to 60 human heads. The heads were on their way to a Fort Worth medial research company, but the local coroner says the shipment had "discrepancies". According to NBC news in Forth Worth, the company that supplied the heads had their license revoked back in December.

Arkansas - Sturzflut auf Campingplatz: mindestens 16 Tote

«Es war wie ein Tsunami», schilderte eine Augenzeugin. Eine plötzliche Sturzflut nach heftigen Regenfällen hat auf einem Campingplatz im Südwesten des US-Staates Arkansas mindestens 16 Menschen in den Tod gerissen. Unter den Opfern sind auch Kinder. Und die Zahl der Toten könnte noch steigen: Stunden nach dem Unglück wurden etwa 30 Menschen weiterhin vermisst, wie US-Medien am Freitag berichteten. Die Polizei äusserte die Hoffnung, dass sie sich in Sicherheit bringen konnten und zu Fuss in dem unwegsamen Gelände unterwegs sind - auf der Suche nach Hilfe. Zwischenzeitlich hatten die Behörden sogar von 20 Toten gesprochen.

Arkansas: "Trail of Tears", der Leidensweg der Cherokee Indianer

New signs and markers along Arkansas' portions of the Trail of Tears should be erected by spring, officials said after President Obama signed an act that expands the historic trail to more than 4,900 miles in nine states. The Trail of Tears is the name given to the routes that more than 16,000 Cherokee Indians traveled during their forced removal from their homelands to what is now Oklahoma.
