BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei: A Thai man has been attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing in Brunei, in a rare incident in the oil-rich sultanate, police have said. Brunei police recovered the body of the Thai national on Monday after he was attacked by the crocodile the previous day while fishing with friends on a river. The body has been sent for a post mortem examination, media reported.

The city of Melbourne in Australia will be part of the Royal Brunei Airlines network from 29 March 2011. A four-time weekly service will be introduced in which Royal Brunei Airlines will depart Bandar Seri Begawan to Melbourne on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. With the addition of Melbourne, Royal Brunei will fly 14 times weekly to three cities in Australia.

THE oil-rich kingdom of Brunei will undertake a major redevelopment of its airport at a cost of about US$111 million dollars over the next three years, an official said on Thursday. The project will focus on improving passenger convenience and boosting baggage security, said Julian Fung, assistant chief executive officer and head of infrastructure development of Brunei Economic Development Board. Since its opening in 1974 the airport has been upgraded twice, in the mid-1980s and in 2000. The current upgrade is part of Brunei's plans to flag itself as an aviation hub on Borneo island, where the tiny kingdom is located. Brunei International Airport is currently capable of handling 2.2 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo a year.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Brunei) - BRUNEI'S sultan announced on Wednesday he was divorcing his Malaysian wife after five years of marriage. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 63-year-old absolute monarch of this tiny, oil-rich country on Borneo island, married Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim, a former Malaysian TV news journalist, in 2005. Ms Azrinaz, 30, gave birth to the sultan's 11th child, a baby boy, less than a year after their wedding and a daughter in 2008. Brunei's palace announced on state television and radio late on Wednesday that the sultan had divorced Ms Azrinaz and revoked all her royal titles. No other details were made available, but rumours of a royal breakup had been circulating in Brunei. This is the second divorce for the sultan, whose private fortune has been estimated to total at least US$20 billion (S$27.8 billion) in recent years. He broke up with former airline stewardess Mariam Abdul Aziz, who is of Bruneian, Japanese and Scottish ancestry, in February 2003 after 21 years of marriage.

KUALA LUMPUR - FORMER premier Mahathir Mohamad has dropped a bombshell in his blog, revealing that Malaysia signed away lucrative oil fields off Borneo in exchange for Brunei dropping its claim to land in Sarawak. His successor, former premier Abdullah Badawi, on Friday was forced to fend off the allegation. In his blog, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad accused Tun Abdullah, who stepped down just over a year ago, of signing away two offshore oil-rich areas off Borneo, known as blocks L and M. In the blistering attack, Dr Mahathir said: 'Abdullah has caused Malaysia to lose at least US$100 billion (S$137 billion) of Malaysia's oil in this agreement.' He did not disclose how he arrived at the US$100 billion figure, but said that the oil reserves in the two blocks amounted to almost one billion barrels.
