Joe Lange: The Nested Moon
January 2010 I saw the moon coming up and it was so beautiful. I knew about a Saguaro (sa-war-o) that was 16 miles (27.5km) south of Quartzsite. I wondered if I could put the moon in this saguaro.

So I drove down there but the moon was not right that night, but I knew that if I was there the next night I would be able to line it up in the saguaro. I went down again the next night and was able to capture the picture seen above.

Later I learned that this was the second full moon of the month. So it is called a "Blue Moon". You have heard the saying "Once in a Blue Moon", that's because it does'n happen very often. Two full moons in one month only happens 'once in a blue moon'.

The moon's orbit around the earth is elipical (oval) and this time it is closer than usual, so it appeared 13% larger than normal.

I am so happy that I was able to get this picture. It is priceless.

Joe Lange: How to photograph scorpions
An exciting adventure. First you need to find them. This can be done with a 'blacklite' which causes the scorpion fluorese at night in the dark. The main fluorescent component is now known to be beta-Carboline found only in the adults. The babies and juviniles do not fluorese.

We would drive slowly along the side of the road and Tootie, my partner, would hold the blacklite out the window. When she would spot one I would hear "STOP, back up, yes there's one" and the fun would begin.

Now approach very carefully so as not to cause vibrations in the ground, or your subject will flee almost instantly.

Get down in his face and get your shot, keeping the blacklite on your subject, or else he will disappear from your sight. That can be a little un-nerving; being down there with a scorpion, with your camera in his face, and not being able to see him.

Use your flash or else you will have a picture of a fluorescent scorpion with a blue background (although that also makes a good picture).

Have a GREAT time...
