Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra erupted on Sunday at 00.15 a.m. Antara news agency reported local villagers did not expect the eruption as the geophysics and meteorology agency just declared a normal status for the mountain. Villagers fled home to a safer location, but no police officers yet helped the evacuation process. On Saturday, the 2,400 meter-high mountain showed its volcanic activity by spewing black clouds.

An Indonesian volcano has erupted yet again, sending black ash half a kilometre into the air - its most powerful eruption since coming back to life after four centuries of dormancy. The force of Mount Sinabung's explosion on Tuesday could be felt 8km away. "This one was really terrifying," Anissa Siregar, a local resident, told the Associated Press news agency, as she and her two children arrived by lorry at an emergency shelter near the base.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had to delay his return to Jakarta after visiting refugees of the Mount Sinabung volcanic eruption in Karo regency, North Sumatra, on Tuesday after the volcano's latest eruption earlier in the day. Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha told kompas.com that the President had to listen to an explanation by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) chief Surono about the latest development of the volcano activity.

Blackout hits villages after latest Sinabung eruption
Electricity in seven villages in Karo regency, North Sumatra, has been cut off following the latest eruption of Mount Sinabung early Tuesday. Ali Ginting, an official of the local state power company PT PLN, told kompas.com that they suspected the connection had been disrupted by ash and rain after the eruption.

PMI distributes 25,000 masks to Mt Sinabung evacuees
The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has distributed about 25 thousand masks to residents in Tanah Karo district, North Sumatra, following the recent eruption of Mount Sinabung. "We distributed the masks in road intersections," Head of the PMI`s Disaster Mitigation Division Sumarsono said here on Sunday. In addition, the PMI also had distributed sanitation and family kits consisting of soap, toothpaste, buckets, sarongs and blankets to the evacuees, he said.

Another 1,111 people evacuate after Mt Sinabung`s third eruption
The number of evacuees rose on Saturday after Mount Sinabung in Tanah Karo district, North Sumatra, erupted for the third time in a week the day before. By 10.00 p.m., the number of evacuees sheltered at a number of areas in Kabanjahe increased 1,111 to 21,706 from 20,595 previously. Part of the new evacuees fled their home before the 2,640-meter-high Mount Sinabung erupted at 04.50 a.m. on Friday, Head of the Tanah Karo Communications and Information Service Jhonson Tarigan said on Saturday night. Thousands of the evacuees were transported to the refugee camps using trucks owned by the Tanah Karo district administration, he said.

Thick smoke mixed with volcanic ash was seen covering Mount Sinabung in Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, on Saturday after its fourth eruption at 6.05pm on Friday. Head of the local office of the ministry of communications and information Jhonson Tarigan when contacted by ANTARA from here on Saturday said thick smoke still kept flowing out of the volcano. He said people in Kabanjahe could not see the mountain laying 2,640 meter above the sea level because of the smoke.

Die Rückkehrer waren Bauern, die vor allem wissen, wie es um ihre Ernte und ihre Tiere steht. Die Luft roch aber immer noch stark nach Schwefel. «In diesem Jahr wird es keine Ernte geben», sagte der Bauer Betta Tarigan. «Sehen Sie sich diese Tomaten an.» Er wollte danach wieder in eines der Auffanglager für die Evakuierten zurückkehren. Der Vulkan hatte zuletzt am Montag heisse Asche bis zu 2000 Meter in die Luft geschleudert.

AN INDONESIAN volcano dormant for four centuries erupted for the second straight day Monday, shooting clouds of hot ash more than a mile into the air and forcing 30,000 people to flee. Some domestic airplanes had to be diverted because of poor visibility. Many villagers living along the slopes of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province wore masks as they packed their belongings and headed to emergency shelters, mosques and churches, said Andi Arief, a presidential adviser on disasters. Their abandoned homes and crops were blanketed in gray soot and the air was thick with the smell of sulfur. While two people died - a 64-year-old woman from respiratory problems and a 52-year-old man from a heart attack - it was too early to say if the volcano was to blame, said Priyadi Kardono of the National Disaster Management Agency.

Over 2,470 out of 30,052 evacuees from rumbling Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra have suffered from various illnesses, including throat inflammation, diarrhea and eye irritation, after being temporarily accommodated at local evacuation centers. “The illnesses are possibly caused by cold temperature and thick ashes in villages where the evacuees are temporarily accommodated,” head of Karo regency health office Diana Elita Ginting said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com. Two of the them were rushed to a nearby hospital because of blood vomiting and high fever, Diana said, adding that her office had deployed several groups of medical personnel at each evacuation center with each group consisting of four doctors and four medical officers.

Quake felt in Mount Sinabung
A five-minute quake rattled villages near Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra on Monday as the volcano continued to spew ash clouds. Irfin Dian, a Kabanjahe resident, said the temblor was felt for five minutes before Mount Sinabung spewed thick black clouds. One dies in Mount Sinabung eruption
A 54-year-old man died Sunday from a respiratory problem when he fled home during the Mount Sinabung eruption in North Sumatra. Kompas.com reported that presidential special staff for social and natural disaster Andi Arief posted the news in his tweeter account. "President has actively monitored the eruption," Andi said. Report said at least 12,000 local people left their homes following the eruption.

Mount Sinabung eruption damages forests, agriculture
Fire spewing from an eruption at Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra blazed nearby forests and agricultural fields on Sunday. Around 3,740 hectares of forest and farming fields were burned by lava, volcanic ashes and fire surging from Mt. Sinabung, NGO Penyelamat Nusantara secretary Syafii Tarigan said. “Our markets, homes and roads are covered with white ash.
