Dengue fever cases rising ahead of New Delhi Games
More victims of dengue fever are being reported in New Delhi as the competition program for the Commonwealth Games nears its start. About 3,500 cases of the mosquito-borne disease have been reported in the city, and seven of them have died, the Press Trust of India reported. No one from the Commonwealth Games, which open Sunday and close of Oct. 14, has been affected, however. The Indian team denied a report that a lawn bowling team manager contracted the disease. "No manager has dengue fever," the team said Sunday. Dengue fever, a painful illness that can be life-threatening, is a viral disease that spreads through mosquito bites. It has become an issue in the Indian capital this year because of the extended monsoon season, which increased the amount of stagnant water around the city.
